One of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War was the Battle of Allatoona Pass fought on October 5, 1864. Sherman had already captured Atlanta and the Confederate army was trying to close this major railway pass and cut off supplies to the Union army. A few days after the battle a strange box was shipped into the depot in Allatoona. It was left alone for two days and two nights until some women who worked at the depot opened the box to find the badly decomposed remains of a Confederate soldier. The women buried the soldier and the railroad later erected this monument to remember him. The burial site is said to be haunted. The disrepair of this monument suggests that this is a forgotten hero instead of unknown hero.

Seems the way of today, between neglect and desecration, there must be thousands of such stories from the wars of history. At least you have remembered him, his ending at least.

A beautiful and melancholy photo and story. I'm sorry his grave is in such a state of deterioration. Perhaps if it was brought to the attention of the town fathers, something could be done.

Very moving photos and story. I would hope that some scout troop or school group would take on the task of maintaining the gravesite. Perhaps someday.
