210:365 Risky Polkweed is abundant in Alabama in the summertime. All parts of the polkweed are poisonous to humans and animals except the young leaves that sprout out of the ground in the spring. People boil the leaves three times to get rid of the toxins and make polk salad. I remember going with my neighbor when I was a young girl searching for polkweed in the spring. She made polk salad every year and said that it was very medicinal. Some doctors say that it is risky to eat the leaves even after they have been boiled. The seeds turn dark purple when they are ripe and they are not poisonous to birds. They gobble them up. Theme #261.
209:365 Rest in Peace The cemetery in Central City, Colorado, is on a hill overlooking the town. It is filled with wildflowers and aspens. On the day we visited, the wind was whistling and the whole mood was isolated and lonely. Ghosts have been spotted here. Theme #260.
The bikes are unloaded and ready to go. Two of the guides on our trip are standing at the edge of the Pikes Peak summit. They are looking at Denver more than 60 miles away. Theme #177.
207:365 On the Road The most exciting thing that we did on our vacation was descending Pikes Peak on mountain bikes. Our outfitter was Challenge Unlimited and the whole experience was way cool. Challenge Unlimited takes two vans to the summit of Pikes Peak. I was in the last van, and you can see the front van loaded with bicycles. It was a beautiful, clear morning and our group was very excited. Theme #208.
206:365 Magical or Mystical Manitou Springs, Colorado, is a very different kind of place. The attitudes are laid-back and casual. Palm readers and mysticism fit very well into the scheme of things. Theme #179.
204:365 America the Beautiful The view from the visitor’s center at the Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs with the morning sun shining on the Garden and Pikes Peak in the background. It is truly an awe expiring sight. The outlook from the summit of Pikes Peak (below) inspired Katharine Lee Bates to write “America the Beautiful” in 1895.
199:365 Scott Kelby's Second Annual Worldwide Photowalk Today, I participated in Scott Kelby’s Second Annual Worldwide Photowalk. I went to a walk in Dallas, Georgia lead by Mike Nalley. There were lots of nice people and it was a great learning experience for me.

197:365 Haunted The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado was built in 1909. It is best known for inspiring Stephen King to write The Shining. It is one of America’s most haunted hotels.
196:365 Snow Parts of Old Fall River Road in Rocky Mountain National Park are over 11,000 feet above sea level. At this altitude, there is still a lot of snow on the ground. It was a big thrill for us southerners to play in the snow and have snow ball fights in July. Theme #292.
194:365 Something Missing When I was processing the pictures of this ground squirrel, I realized that he is missing an ear. He had a narrow escape at sometime in his life. Theme #295.
193:365 Box Office The Park Theatre in Estes Park, Colorado. Built in 1913, it is the oldest operating theatre west of the Mississippi River. Theme #31.
One thing that I like about the 365 blog is that it makes you take all kinds of photographs. Taking pictures inside is still very difficult for me. It takes of lot of experimentation and that's why participating in the 365 challenge is such a good thing.
187:365 Watercolor Today's post is a two-fer. This week in the Elements Village forum, the Be Creative challenge was a watercolor tutorial. Also, I am taking the free photoediting course offered by Jessica Spraque, and today's lesson is to add a frame and word art to a photo.
186:365 Fruits of the Season My husband enjoys gardening and we usually have lots of fresh vegetables in the summer. This white eggplant has been my favorite this year. Eggplants got their name from the white eggplant because, as you can see, it looks like an egg growing on a bush. These original eggplants are making a comeback, and they are quite tasty. Theme #114.
