210:365 Risky

210:365 Risky
Polkweed is abundant in Alabama in the summertime. All parts of the polkweed are poisonous to humans and animals except the young leaves that sprout out of the ground in the spring. People boil the leaves three times to get rid of the toxins and make polk salad. I remember going with my neighbor when I was a young girl searching for polkweed in the spring. She made polk salad every year and said that it was very medicinal. Some doctors say that it is risky to eat the leaves even after they have been boiled. The seeds turn dark purple when they are ripe and they are not poisonous to birds. They gobble them up. Theme #261.

209:365 Rest in Peace

209:365 Rest in Peace
The cemetery in Central City, Colorado, is on a hill overlooking the town. It is filled with wildflowers and aspens. On the day we visited, the wind was whistling and the whole mood was isolated and lonely. Ghosts have been spotted here. Theme #260.

207:365 On the Road

207:365 On the Road
The most exciting thing that we did on our vacation was descending Pikes Peak on mountain bikes. Our outfitter was Challenge Unlimited and the whole experience was way cool. Challenge Unlimited takes two vans to the summit of Pikes Peak. I was in the last van, and you can see the front van loaded with bicycles. It was a beautiful, clear morning and our group was very excited. Theme #208.

206:365 Magical or Mystical

206:365 Magical or Mystical
Manitou Springs, Colorado, is a very different kind of place. The attitudes are laid-back and casual. Palm readers and mysticism fit very well into the scheme of things. Theme #179.
